Reviewing Your Commercial Auto Insurance Driver List
Your commercial auto policy is built around the drivers you’ve listed. These individuals are evaluated based on their driving history, license status and experience. If someone is operating a company vehicle and isn’t listed on the policy, it could lead to complications.
Over time, your team may change. Employees leave, new hires come on board, and roles shift. A driver once assigned to a vehicle may now be working in a different department. If your insurance policy doesn’t reflect these changes, it may not accurately represent your business.
Inaccurate driver lists can also affect how your premiums are calculated. Insurers assess risk based on the drivers you report. If your list includes someone who no longer works for you or omits someone who regularly drives, your rate may not reflect your actual exposure.
When to Review and Update
Review your driver list at least once a quarter. This allows you to catch changes early and make updates before your renewal date. However, there are specific moments when a review is critical:
- New hires: Anytime you bring on a new employee who will be driving a company vehicle, add them to your policy.
- Departures: Remove former employees promptly to keep your list accurate.
- License changes: If a driver’s license status changes, such as a suspension or renewal, update your records.
- Role changes: If someone shifts into or out of a driving role, reflect that in your policy.
